DALLAS, TX — Steward Health Care, the nation’s largest private, for profit physician-led health care network, today named distinguished health care attorney Herb Holtz as General Counsel. Holtz brings three decades of legal experience to Steward, spanning health care, intellectual property and employment law.
His appointment is effective October 1, 2018 and Holtz will report to Steward Chairman and CEO Dr. Ralph de la Torre. He will serve on Steward’s senior leadership team at the company’s Dallas headquarters.
“Over the past several years, I’ve worked closely with Herb on a number of important and complex cases — his intelligence, tenacity and common sense is unrivaled,” said Dr. de la Torre. “As one of the nation’s top health care lawyers, Herb’s extensive and varied expertise in every component of the sector will be of immense value to Steward and guiding our path forward.”
For nearly 15 years, Holtz has been a partner at Boston law firm, Holtz & Reed. In addition to representing Steward, he has served as the lead outside counsel for Boston’s major academic medical centers, including the Harvard teaching hospitals, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. For eight years, Holtz has also served as outside General Counsel to a leading pharmaceutical company.
“I’ve had the distinction of working with Steward over the past several years and I’m immensely impressed with the company’s growth trajectory and the transformative impact the company is having on the health care sector,” said Holtz. “I’m honored to be joining the important and life-changing mission Steward is on to make affordable world class health care more accessible than ever before.”
Holtz was recognized by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly as a “2014 Lawyer of the Year.” Additionally, he has been honored repeatedly by his peers as both a New England Super Lawyer and a Massachusetts Super Lawyer. Holtz is a graduate of Connecticut College and earned his J.D. from Boston College.
Holtz replaces current General Counsel Joe Maher who is retiring on January 15, 2019. Maher joined the Steward leadership team in 2008, as General Counsel of Caritas Christi Hospital and became General Counsel of Steward upon the company’s founding in 2010.
“Joe has been at my side as a trusted adviser for more than a decade,” said de la Torre. “His contributions to Steward’s success and enormous growth are substantial. The entire Steward family offers our deepest gratitude and heartfelt wishes to Joe and his family as they turn the page on this next chapter in their life.”
