Fall River, MA – Three Steward Health Care community hospitals in southeastern Massachusetts have been honored for the second time this year with an “A” Hospital Safety ScoreSM by The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits.

The Hospital Safety ScoreSM is calculated under the guidance of The Leapfrog Group’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel using nationally available, publicly reported data on patient injuries, medical and medication errors, and infections. U.S. hospitals were assigned an A, B, C, D, or F for their safety.

Saint Anne’s Hospital in Fall River, Morton Hospital in Taunton, and Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton each received the highest ranking from The Leapfrog Group for safety. The ratings reflect how safe a hospital is for its patients. The goal of the Hospital Safety Score is to reduce the 180,000 annual deaths from hospital errors and injuries through publicly recognizing safety and exposing harm such as medication mix-ups, infections or acquired injuries such as bedsores.

Local hospital presidents note that recognition of safe patient care by gold-standard organizations such as the The Leapfrog Group is the result of their facilities’ concerted approach to providing exemplary quality, safety and service to patients and families.

“The Leapfrog Group’s report is confirmation of Saint Anne’s Hospital’s longtime emphasis on quality care, delivered with great competence and compassion,” said Craig A. Jesiolowski, FACHE, president of Saint Anne’s Hospital. “We are especially proud of our physicians and entire clinical team whose expertise and focus on patient safety make such a difference. In fact, our nursing team scored 100 out of 100 on a key measure that calculates how hospitals protect patients from errors, accidents, and injuries.”

Jesiolowski also noted that Steward Health Care’s investment in significant facility renovations and expansions also contributes to higher quality patient care, safety, service, and satisfaction.

“Saint Anne’s new Emergency Room and operating rooms, and current construction of a new patient wing that will allow conversion of virtually all patient rooms to private rooms in 2013, are important indicators of our commitment to providing high-level community care,” he said.

Kim Bassett, RN, MSN, MBA, Morton Hospital president, shared Jesiolowski’s observations, noting that the recognition by Leapfrog reflects the commitment by Steward Health Care hospitals to providing quality, safe care in modern, accessible facilities.

“We are proud to be among the highest-ranking health care facilities in the state,” said Bassett. “It is a great honor to be recognized for our safety and quality initiatives and to share this with our physicians and staff who work every day to provide safe, effective care to our patients and their families.”

She added, “Steward Health Care continues to invest in Morton Hospital through improvements such as technology and facility upgrades, new surgical equipment for our Operating Rooms, and our highly-anticipated new Emergency Department. These investments allow us to provide the area’s best community health care facilities and programs.”

Calculated under the guidance of The Leapfrog Group’s nine-member Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 26 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single score representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from infections, injuries, and medical and medication errors.
