Well, I can truly say with total confidence that I would repeat this surgery all over again in a heart beat, because it gave me back my joy to live, which I had lost due to my weight. My success was not only due to my discipline and the guidance given to me by the all the medical staff, but also due to my daughter's help and support. All the hospital's staff treated me with respect and professionalism!
Maria underwent a laparoscopic gastric bypass with Dr. McCluney at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center.
For one woman, weight loss surgery was not just life changing, it was life giving. Logan was born on August 8, 2011 to Flower and her husband Pierce. While Logan’s arrival was picture perfect, his mother’s journey to a healthy pregnancy was determined, thoughtful and courageous.
In 2003, Flower, now 33-years-old and living in Quincy, Mass., met with the surgeons of the Steward® Centers for Weight Control at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center. She immediately bonded with Nicole Pecquex, MD, director of the bariatric surgery program at St. Elizabeth’s. At that time, Flower was 25 years old, approximately 250 lbs. and saw no end to her weight gain.
“I had early arthritis setting into both knees. I had elevated blood pressure and was on the road to high cholesterol,” said Flower . “I could not be as active as I wanted to be, my body could not keep up with what I wanted to do. I knew that I was at risk for even more serious complications from my obesity and wanted to take control and correct the situation.”
Working with Pecquex and the nurses, dietitians, psychologists and support staff of the Steward Centers for Weight Control, Flower found a program that took an active part in her case and made the time to ensure that she had everything she needed to be successful. In 2004, Flower underwent successful weight loss surgery. “The decision to undergo weight loss surgery has impacted every aspect of my life. First and foremost, I am healthy. I have the energy, the strength and the ability to do things now that I could not physically do before,” said Flower shortly after her surgery. “It was such a positive life altering experience and I would do it again in a heartbeat.”
However, one of the most impactful experiences was yet to come. In early 2011, Flower received the wonderful news she had been waiting for – she was pregnant.
Pregnancy and Motherhood after Weight Loss Surgery
Flower had a wonderful pregnancy with no complications. She worked closely with her doctors to make sure she was achieving a healthy weight throughout the pregnancy and because of that, she was able to gain about 25 lbs.
However, she admits it was a challenge to watch the scale inch up each time she was weighed during a pre-natal appointment. “I learned I need to listen to my body rather than the number on the scale,” explained Flower. “Prior to my pregnancy I had been obsessed with keeping the weight off and seeing the numbers climb I had to remind myself to keep a level head about it.”
“I have always looked at my weight loss surgery as a tool and that is why I’ve been successful keeping the weight off,” she said. “I focus on being healthy, and now with Logan, I have even more reasons to focus on this.”
As a child, I was always heavier than most kids my age.
As an adult, my struggle with the weight got even more serious until finally reaching a point where something needed to be done - and fast. Otherwise, I was going to have major health problems.
That's when I decided to visit St. Elizabeth's Center for Weight Control. I first met with Dr. Pecquex who explained the different weight loss procedures available to me. Then, I started going to support group meetings and talking to patients who had gastric bypass or LAP-BAND® surgery. Every single person said the same thing: "I wish I had done this sooner." Well, that was all I needed to hear. I had done my homework, asked lots of questions, and was ready to start my journey to a healthier, happier new me.
Today, everyone on my St. E's weight loss surgery team is still like family to me. They truly helped change my life. I feel better, I look better and I actually love myself now.
I had been obese since childhood, tried every diet, been to nutritionists and nothing ever worked! But, as scary as gastric bypass surgery sounded, at 38 I was ready to get control of my weight once and for all. I decided to check out the Center for Weight Control at St. Elizabeth's.
What I found was a fantastic staff of compassionate professionals who understood that obesity is not just a matter of "getting a grip, shutting your mouth and losing weight!" Aside from the skill of the surgeons, St. E's program offered tremendous follow-up care after my procedure. There were appointments with the nutritionist that helped keep me on track. And, there were the monthly support groups where I met the most amazing people.
My life, today, is so much better than I ever thought it would be! The sense of accomplishment I feel from having made this great decision is amazing! I never thought I would find such a strong, powerful person buried underneath all that weight!
Before having my LAP-BAND® surgery, I never would have dreamed of climbing Mt. Washington. One of the best things about having the LAP-BAND was hearing my son tell his friends 'my mom looks great' and hearing my daughter tell her co-workers that I was an inspiration. Everyone from the office staff to the surgeons has been caring, kind and approachable.

Susan went to Dr. Adam Glasgow for her LAP-BAND® surgery procedure. She had this procedure in her community at Norwood Hospital.
Being able to be comfortable on an airplane without a seat belt extender, and without squeezing next to other people is GREAT! The way to change is through the LAP-BAND®, and you can live with this for the rest of your life.
