Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on your height and weight that applies to both adult men and women. BMI, rather than, weight is used to determine whether or not an individual qualifies for bariatric surgery.
If your BMI is greater than or equal to 40 you qualify for bariatric surgery regardless of being diagnosed with any weight related illnesses. Also, patients with a BMI equal to or greater than 35 also qualify for the surgery if they experience weight related illnesses.
*In some cases, a BMI of 30 may qualify for lap band surgery. Insurance may not cover this cost requiring self pay.
