St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center is a member of Steward Health Care, the largest fully integrated community care organization in New England. St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center of Boston offers its patients, staff and trainees a unique combination.  It is a world class center for treatment, teaching and research while maintaining its tradition as a community hospital that delivers the best in personal care.  We are located in a friendly residential neighborhood that is home to a mix of social and ethnic groups.  We are only minutes from downtown Boston and from other major medical and teaching institutions. St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center is a teaching affiliate of Tufts University School of Medicine.  Students rotate at the medical center in first year selective courses, second year physical diagnosis, third year clerkships in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, OB/Gyn and fourth year students rotate on the major and subspecialty services.  Our residents receive appointments as clinical fellows at Tufts University School of Medicine.  Staff members who teach students and house staff also hold Tufts faculty appointments.

We train approximately 154 of house staff annually in ACGME accredited training programs in the specialties of Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Psychiatry, and Anesthesiology.  Our fellowships included:  Cardiovascular Medicine, Interventional Cardiology, Electrophysiology, Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine, and Hematology/Oncology.  We also have unaccredited programs in Cardiothoracic Anesthesia, Peripheral Vascular Disease and Urologic Laparoscopy and Robotic Surgery.  We also have residents and fellows who rotate at the medical center from Tufts Medical Center in Gastroenterology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Neurology, Infectious Disease, Ophthalmology, and Nephrology.

Library Facilities
The Stohlman Library supports both clinical and research activities at St. Elizabeth's. On the medical center's main floor, the library provides a comfortable environment in which to research medical questions. Skilled staff are ready to assist and offer the following reference services: On-line literature searching, inter-library loaning, telefacsimile assistance. MEDLINE is available for end-user searching at a CD-ROM workstation. There is 24-hour access to the library. The Stohlman collection contains approximately 1,100 medical titles and 260 journal subscriptions. In addition, St. Elizabeth's participates in local, state, and national networks, which provide access to the collections of thousands of hospitals, colleges, and medical schools.

Benefits
The Medical Center offers a choice of comprehensive health plans:  Tufts Total Health and Network Blue New England, as well as Dental Preferred Option USA.  St. Elizabeth’s assumes a portion of the cost for this coverage with the employee contributing a bi-weekly fee.  The medical center also provides disability and life insurance.  A flexible-spending program allows you to save taxes on the amount you pay via payroll deductions for health insurance and childcare.  (Detailed in employee handbook).

Other benefits include three weeks paid vacation, supplementary life insurance, tax shelter annuities, and low cost parking and on-site childcare. St. Elizabeth’ also offers discount tickets to sporting events, movies, theater, local health club, MBTA subsidized passes.  (Detailed in employee handbook).

Professional Liability Insurance
Malpractice insurance is provided to each house officer. The limits of this policy are $1,000,000/$3,000,000.

Stipends
St. Elizabeth's offers salaries that are competitive with other Boston area teaching hospitals. The salaries are adjusted annually.

St. Elizabeth's Medical Center Resident Eligibility

Purpose:To assure the fair selection of residents/fellows into St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center Graduate Medical Education programs and to assure compliance with accreditation requirements.

Scope:This policy applies to all graduate medical education programs sponsored by St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center (SEMC)

Applicants with one of the following qualifications are eligible for appointment to ACGME-accredited programs at SEMC

  • Graduates of medical schools in the United States and Canada accredited by the  Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME)
  • Graduates of colleges of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA)
  • Graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada who meet one of the following qualifications:
    • Have received a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission For Foreign Medical Graduates prior to appointment or have a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a US licensing jurisdiction in which they are training
  • Graduates of medical schools outside the United States who have completed a Fifth Pathway program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school.

Resident/Fellow Selection

  • Eligible applicants are selected on the basis of their preparedness, ability, aptitude, academic credentials, communication skills, and personal qualities such as motivation and integrity.  Programs must not discriminate with regard to sex, race, age, religion, color, national origin, disability, or any other legally protected status.
  • All qualified applicants so far as possible should participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), where such is available.

Visa Requirements

SEMC sponsors the following visas (policy to be updated)

  • The foreign national physician must pass Step 1 and Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK) of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), or an examination determined to be equivalent to the NBME by the Secretary of the US Department of Health and Human Services.  In addition, the foreign national physician must hold a valid Standard ECFMG certificate; have a contract with an ACGME-accredited program at SEMC, provide a written statement from the Ministry of Health in the country of most recent legal permanent residence that attest to the need for physicians trained in the exchange visitor’s specialty and that verifies that the exchange visitor has filed written assurance that he/she will return to the county upon completion of training.  The duration of participation for the exchange visitor at SEMC is for the time required to meet the educational requirements for certification by an American specialty board that has been recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties.  Duration of participation is further limited to a maximum of 7 years.
  • Statement Regarding FMGEMS Examination:
    The Foreign Medical Graduate Examination in the Medical Sciences (FMGEMS) is not a qualifying exam for licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.  Applicants who only hold this exam do not meet the eligibility requirements to train in Massachusetts.

Library

Uniforms
Uniforms are issued to house officers. Laundering of the uniforms is the responsibility of the house officer.

Lockers
Lockers are issued to each house officer for the duration of training. The lockers are located on the ground level of the house officers’ quarters next to Cardiac Rehab.

Meals
Meals are available to all employees in the hospital’s cafeteria. Meal tickets are issued for house staff on call.
