Learn about MAKOplasty® Partial Knee Resurfacing

MAKOplasty Partial Knee Resurfacing

Innovative alternative to knee replacement surgery

What is MAKOplasty® Partial Knee Resurfacing?

MAKOplasty® is an innovative treatment option for adults living with early- to mid-stage osteoarthritis (OA) in the inner (medial), top (patellofemoral) or outer (lateral) compartments of the knee.

Powered by the RIO® Robotic Arm Interactive Orthopedic System, MAKOplasty® enables surgeons and hospitals to address the needs of a large and growing, yet currently underserved, patient population.

During the procedure, the diseased portion of the knee is resurfaced, sparing the patient’s healthy bone and surrounding tissue. An implant is then secured in the joint to allow the knee to move smoothly again.

Benefits of MAKOplasty®

MAKOplasty® Partial Knee Resurfacing can:

  • Facilitate optimal implant positioning to result in a more natural-feeling knee following surgery
  • Result in quicker recovery and shorter hospital stay than with traditional knee replacement surgery
  • Be performed on an outpatient basis
  • Promote rapid relief from pain and return to daily activities

As a knee arthroplasty procedure, MAKOplasty® is typically covered by most Medicare-approved and private health insurers.

Robotic Arm Interactive Orthopedic System (RIO®)

The RIO® Robotic Arm Interactive Orthopedic System features three-dimensional, pre-surgical planning. During surgery, the RIO® provides the surgeon with real-time visual, tactile and auditory feedback for optimal joint resurfacing and positioning of the implant. This works to result in more natural knee motion after surgery.

Some of the features and benefits of the RIO® system for surgeons and patients include:

  • Surgeons can accurately plan the size, orientation and alignment of the knee implant by using CT-based, 3-D modeling.
  • Enables the pre-resection capture of patient-specific kinematic tracking through full flexion and extension.
  • Surgeons can make real-time adjustments for correct knee movement and soft-tissue balance during surgery.
  • The RIO® is minimally invasive and bone-sparing. This results in minimal tissue trauma for faster recovery.
