St. Dominic Patient Care Unit - Dedicated Inpatient Care

About St. Dominic

The name of our inpatient care unit is a tribute to St. Dominic, the patron saint of the Dominican Sisters who founded Saint Anne's Hospital.  This tribute reflects the courage and profound compassion of St. Dominic, who founded the Dominican Order and preached the Gospel in turbulent times.  For patients and families of all faith traditions, it conveys that St. Dominic's ministry of healing, hope and humanity is our ministry, too.

When patients with a cancer diagnosis need to be hospitalized, Saint Anne's specialized inpatient care unit offers unparalleled care.

The 24-bed St. Dominic Patient Care Unit is staffed by a team that includes specially trained registered nurses with local and national chemotherapy and oncology certifications, as well as other clinicians specializing in cancer care. In addition to high level care, St. Dominic offers a genuine sensitivity to the unique issues that accompany a cancer diagnosis.

The Team Approach to Care

The care team, composed of social workers, case managers, registered dietitians, chaplains and additional support staff, works closely with physicians and nurses to help patients and their families cope with hospitalization. The team meets daily to discuss and review each patient's care plan to ensure their wishes are met. This multidisciplinary team approach addresses the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the patient, providing holistic care.

Nursing Model

The unit's primary nursing model fosters the valuable relationship between nurse, patient and family members, while reducing the number of employees encountered, which allows the patient to preserve precious strength needed to focus on restoring health.

Nurses on the unit, many of whom have been at Saint Anne's for more than 10 years, are skilled at creating a family-like atmosphere. In addition, nurses on the unit serve as mentors for nursing students attending local colleges, many of whom later join the team. Others serve on hospital committees dedicated to research and continuous improvement of quality care.

The inpatient care unit offers important resources for families, including a weekly caregiver support group where participants can learn new coping skills and self-care ideas to help manage the many demands and responsibilities of daily care giving. The program, sponsored and facilitated by Steward Home Care, invites caregivers to meet with others who understand the experience of caring for a loved one.

In situations where end-of-life care is needed, a specially-appointed patient room provides a quiet and peaceful alternative when home-based hospice is not an option.  Here, patients receive compassionate care by a team they trust.

Whatever the reason for the need for hospitalization during cancer treatment, our St. Dominic unit provides the care guided by the mission of the Dominican Sisters and values each relationship formed in the spirit of Steward care.
